The Little Green Cottage organic B&B

Our organic B&B The Little Green Cottage (Het Groene Huisje in Dutch) is a comfortable eco-built chalet-like miniature cottage (cabin) for 2 guests. You'll find it in the hamlet of Molenrij (50 houses, 5 farms) only 3 km from the Wadden Sea in rural Groningen, on the north coast of Holland. The cottage nestles in its own patch of meadow at the far end of an informally landscaped 2-acre organic garden, to which B&B-guests have a private entrance. We offer our guests free parking and free entry to practically the whole garden.

We, your hosts Doortje Stellwagen (therapist and photographer) and Alma Huisken (writer and eco-gardener), live in a refurbished late 19th-century village-farm which also contains a garden shop cum gallery. We grow our own fruit and veg and keep chickens, geese and honeybees. Garden and farmhouse together are called De Groene Luwte, which means it's green, lush and far from the madding crowd. This is a lovely, peaceful and subtly energizing spot, perfect for relaxation and a digital detox from modern, hectic life!

Listen... yes, it's just birdsong you hear, apart from the wind in the willows. Did you see the swallows dive in the sky and notice all those stars at night? Take a trip into another world, and come to the wide open spaces of the sparsely populated, beautiful North. Book a night or two in our B&B, unwind, sleep like a log and enjoy an organic breakfast fit for kings and queens.

The Little Green Cottage is built of locally sourced untreated wood and eco insulating material. Back to Nature and Back to Basics are the motto's here... so the cottage has no WiFi, no running water and as yet no heating (apart from extra duvets and hot water-bottles) nor a standard WC! Instead we built a separate, clean compost toilet and a separate wash-cabin with 2 water-tanks and a sink; bath-towels, facecloths and eco-soap are provided, as are thermosflasks with piping hot water in the mornings and evenings, for washing. Both loo and wash-cabin are for B&B-guests only. All lamps are powered by solar-energy. Inside the cottage you'll find books and magazines (also in English), board-games, maps and info on things to do.

Just imagine: a rustic but comfortable tiny chalet, at the top of a lush garden. Take a seat under the walnut tree and look: a 180 degrees free view unfolds right in front of you. Go on, settle down in the morning sun and enjoy your breakfast which we serve on the veranda. Do as you wish all day long, read a book, stroll through our garden, rent a canoe, a bike, or take a hike on the famous Pieterpad long distance-trail. Visit quaint villages with 12th-century churches, browse in art galleries or spot roe deer in the fields and don't be surprised if a full double rainbow emerges....
We know that many guests found The Little Green Cottage the perfect place to shed everyday worries. Surprisingly quickly they could relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. We hope you do too!
